week 13 bionics and our biophysical future

Supporting the "bionic" person - well is that what we are doing with stimulating people's brains and enabling them to move and come out of coma. For sure I would agree with the technology that enables those kinds of actions. I think I cringe at the thought of what science might want to try to do with it - like super charging an athlete in some way for competitive reasons or some other ways that just bring fame and fortune to inventors and manufacturers. It feels a bit like we are messing with nature too much to develop a bionic person. However, I totally support the engineering of blood vessels, bladders, body parts like that can restore a person to health.

Controlling artificial limbs by thought alone - incredible. I imagine that some people would be more responsive to this process, but can't even think how this could really happen. Or can I? Could it be very focused intent that signals brain cells to respond to a command? Different people have skills that they have learned to develop or have just been born with. For example, Michael who did our photography, he has learned to read auras with some skill after a number of years. So I can think that many things are possible, it is just having someone teach the way. I would be all for this technology helping people who are paralyzed be able to have more fulfilling lives, but it doesn't sit with me for the gaming industry, because it feels too close to playing war.

week 11 energy medicine and energy fields

Acupuncture as an effective energy medicine
It is quite extraordinary to me that despite the longevity of this modality, it has been slowly gaining acceptance in the western world. The first western person to receive acupuncture on a tour of China with Nixon in the 1970 had an acute case of appendices and required surgery. He was amazed when he was offered acupuncture to help in his recovery what an incredible experience it was. Slowly, slowly over the next 30 years or so as our western minds tried to grapple with these concepts - horses were used as guinea pigs and dang they got better. We do have much evidence now that tell us that the needles, chi gong, tai qi, herbs, massage all move the energy. We can put in needles and the fact that people go into the parasympathetic nervous system tells them they have been somewhere else. My first teacher was 56 when she learned about acuppressure. Edith Davis had polio as a child and had physical limitations. While doing some tai qi, she had some difficulty and the instructor pushed some points to relieve her pain. That started her journey in Chinese Medicine and she started a school in Minneapolis at the age of 69. Edith gave an acupuncture treatment at the age of 87 2hours before she had a heart attack and died a few days later in April. She knew of the effectiveness of acupuncture and so do all of us who have experienced the qi. Blessing to Edith.

The Kirlian photography is very fascinating to me. Michael told me a few things about my picture - one was that I was not saying somethings I needed to say. Was it just a coincidence or what that that night was a big release for me saying some things that needed to be said. Blew me away for sure. It is hard to understand what all the different colors mean, but Michaels' experience has led him on a path that some of us find quite interesting and appreciate the wisdom that other's are able to impart. Take what you like and leave the rest as the saying goes.

Human Intent as it affects health
Intention is to me like attitude - its a small thing that can have a huge impact on things. What a person holds as their intention seems to order the output and imput for what follows. For example, I have the intention of getting licensed to practice acupuncture in California. So then I checked out schools - once I learned I just couldn't take the boards, and started the process of interviewing and putting my other life on hold to pursue the intention of school. It is like the map quest of life - you come up with intentions and the universe gives you the map to follow. So if the intent is around positive experiences - the whole experience has a different nature than if it is not. My friend Marcie had inflammatory breast cancer a few years ago. She is a chiropractor, had to give up her practice and needed radiation, surgery and chemotherapy in order to deal with the cancer. Her intent when she went into all of these experiences was to be healed by them and saw the experiences in the most positive of lights. Her diagnosis was grim - very few survive this diagnosis. She is back at work and I believe doing some of her best work after a complete recovery.

week 10 chemistry of life

Life and Living Systems
I know I'm a "living system" because I have feeling, pains, needs, thoughts, wants and the list goes on. Mostly when I go slower, it brings me in touch with the breath and all my surrounding become more vibrant and alive. I can watch a little lizard gobble up an earwig, see the deer and her fawn come on their nightly stroll through my yard, and watch the first star appear on the horizon and all of these experiences tell me I am alive. Other signs are my need to drink water, eat regularly, exercise, sleep, shower, call my mom, check in on my kids, etc. These tell me I am connected to my needs and those of my loved ones.

Biophysics and Oriental Medicine
Well now this is an interesting correlation of how we can explore the deeper levels of healing to the qi level, the blood level, or the organ systems for example on where the imbalances lie. Or is it something to do with a blockage of a pathogenic factors that is the underlying problem. Digging down to the biological level of the system is part of what we do by feeling the pulse, looking at the person and assessing the main symptoms to be involved with some ongoing knowledge to enhance their lives. We want each system to be able to work harmoniously with the whole body so the end result is vitality. There are so many factors that can influence a system like their environment, their diet, their work, family connections, exercise program, meditative practices, belief systems and lifestyles. How intricately we all need to balance all of these factors to be able to do all we need to do in life. It's something.

week 9 continued

Continuing some thoughts on the synthesizing of east and west
Thinking about the rich history the east has with alchemy, both internal and external alchemy, I am amazed how the eastern people tried to connect the universe, nature and knowledge. History says that a whole heck of a lot of them went down trying, but they in fact wrestled with this enormous body of information. I seems like the west went by rules of the church and didn't cross those lines very easily. I can't help but think of what happened in our country to women who used herbs to help heal people, they met a terrible ending by being burned for using folk medicine. This is a stark contrast to the eastern excitement at discovering every substance that was available to them and what it did. Our western history of medicine alone is quite the path of exclusion - where once the AMA was established, nothing else was excepted for alternative medicine for hundreds of years.

Week 9

My e-prime day:
Okay, I see critters around my house
I saw a puggy, furry something disappear from the outside into the house
I do hear noises at night
Upon investigation, we discovered many pathways that lead to the house
We further found at least 6 holes where they could potentially enter the house
We found a bunch of mouse droppings at the sight of the holes
I am off to the store to get a bunch of nummy mouse bait.
Stay tuned

Synthesizing east and western thoughts and world views:
An article that we read for this week talked about how our language varies greatly from eastern to western. The pictures that are part of the language in the east keep the language cleaner and more closer to their original meaning. In the western languages we have a more fragmental effect of isolating generation from each other through meanings that change with time. Pictures don't change meanings. So this piece of info on maybe more grounded knowledge of the east keeps them anchored more to nature than say a language that has such variations over time.

week 8 classical physics

Newton's three laws and me
How I understand these laws is thinking about a mountain. It just stays there without moving until the snow stars flying. As the snow accumulates to such a depth that it starts an avalache of snow cascading down the mountain only stopping when it has dispersed all the excess - so there is no more friction left (first law). Second law again the avalache's acceleration is proportional to the weight of the snow and also by the depth of it's mass. Whatever is in the path of the avalache is hit by the force of its pressure and the pressure of an object in its way exerts it's force. Picturing a volcano works about the same way.

Our energy efficient culture
Our native culture certainly understood the value of consequences that affected 7 generations past them and would ponder those consequences before making changes. We haven't as a culture embraced that value, but as the pinch of energy costs and consequences hit us in the face, we are beginning to welcome more efficient sources for fuel, housing, transportation, etc. It seems that we just starting running with a completely different mentality for centuries, but are not waking up to the benefits that are available by being more energy efficient.

Descartes influence
Well for sure his theories helped spawn the industrial revolution and all that came as a consequence of that, but that seems to be our process. We think the world is flat - go with that theory until we are proven wrong. I'm sure all the technology to come out of the industrial revolution has been profoundly useful, but it came with such a solid belief system that kept people in concrete walls of scientific technology that it didn't leave room for other belief systems that challenged the prevailing one. Ah similar to George and his belief systems. Lots of damage happens around that rigid of a system that we are just beginning to get a sense of the lost connections.

week five symmetry and sacred geometry

My (a)symmetrical world
It turns out we as humans are pretty symmetrical in some areas: ear size, digit length and for women breast size. Digging around I found studies that if the breast sizes were asymmetrical it often indicated an increase rate of breast cancer. It seems symmetry is all around us. Looking at an orchid I was watering - not problem - you could cut the flower in half and it was the exact mirror of each side. Many living organisms display this pattern. However there are also examples that display asymmetry like the crabs that have one huge claw and another that is much smaller. These are atypical of the natural world, but have evolved like that for some reason. From ancient times symbols that show symmetry like the yin yang diagram and the ones used in Buddhist symbolism were valued for what they taught people about life. All around us in space and time, particle interactions mimic these symmetrical patterns.

CP violation
CP violation has to do with the difference in decay time between various particles. The universe was born with equal amounts of matter and antimatter. It stands to reason that when you destroy matter you also destroy antimatter. However, in the universe some particles must exhibit a decay differential because there is always expansion in the universe. In other words the left over particles exhibit a property that is known as cp violation - it explains that matter and antimatter do not behave in identical ways.

Connections between Sacred Geometry and Physics
Dating back to the time mandalas first appeared in the first millennium, people understood the connections that were inherent in these forms that connected so much of life. Much later when Einstein "discovered " higher math concepts, it turns out these were the concepts being used to structure the mandalas. Rather mind blowing. There is also this practice that the Chinese devised thousands of years ago called the I Ching. In it there are 64 combinations of patterns that are used to help those seeking universal insights called hexagrams. Is it by chance that the human DNA has also 64 as a structure number? Patterns that are generated by planets revolving around the sun are similar patterns found in nature. For example, venus's path around the sun generates a pattern of a flower called the camelia that is in the rose family, We see evidence in the kabala tree of life drawing that corresponds very closely to the theory of relativity. The numeric structure of it corresponds to the Hebrew alphabet. It is through the use of our present day technology that we are able to just how insightful and scientific our ancestors were thousands of years ago.

week four energy, matter and the four forces

How has e=mc2 affected me?
On a very deep level, I cringe with knowing the effects that it can have on us through the combination of power and maybe greed. Maybe it was all the grade school years of practicing for a bomb threat that have come back to me when asked how this equation has affected me.
In reality, it is extremely important to remember that I can affect my energy by being aware of it and doing some basic monitoring of it in order to keep it moving through out the day. Practicing some form of meditation or qi gong is a goal to work on my energy with the help of a daily practice. I think it helps energize me to loose weight and build muscle - knowing I can affect my mass and energy in positive ways - that they are connected.

How to compare the four forces?
Comparable to peeling an onion, the outer layer of the onion keeps it all together in a similar way that gravity keeps everything in place in the universe. It is the force of attraction that is acting on every particle with another in nature. Going out to the weak nuclear force - this one is about working with the chemical elements in stars and supernova activities. They are like the clean up crew after a concert. Retrieving the garbage and sorting through it. The strong nuclear force is responsible for the force that powers the stars. Because of this huge bond that the nuclear force has it either keeps vast amounts of energy together or fused or its the power that is released with a fission reaction. Whew something like that anyway. The electromagnetic force is the one responsible for light being absorbed or emitted. We can see this in solar incidences like the sun dogs we see in Minnesota on a very cold day on either side of the sun.

Gravity is such an enormous force that keeps the whole solar system rotating and orbiting in an orderly fashion. This force also holds the energy in other galaxies in their place. It is a pull that draws masses of energy together and holds it while the multitude of planets, starts and energy in a solar system do their dance.

Week three sychronicity

What evidence can I find for sychronicity:
Just examples from my own life that have been to large to ignore. One year I sent a small cloth angel to my youngest sister. We were very close and often bought the same thing for another person without awareness of what each of us had done. This particular year a cloth angel arrived for me and it was the exact one that I had sent to her to Christmas that year. So we sent each other the identical angel - brand and everything to each other that year.
Another dong experience or one that gets your attention happened in a remote camping area in Minnesota on a lake that was very difficult to access. While we were on the lake, I noticed a series of arrows carved into the stones at the water's edge. It was a breathtaking experience. When we got back to camp and were talking with another woman about it, she said she noticed it at about the same moment in time. What it means, I have no idea, but it felt like a synchronistic experience that we had shared on some kind of sacred space.
I do think it took someone like Jung to start researching it to put validity to it. Otherwise we wouldn't have given it such credence and start researching how unlikely events happen at the same time.
Connectivity - how to explain? Well the law of 6 degrees of separation comes to mind. We can be talking about someone and find out without too much effort that this person knows someone who knows someone that we know. Or something like that. It happens with such regularity and so it is just something that we come to accept is true. An interesting thing is that computers can actually validate this connection between people. There was an experiment where letters were sent out to people and were to be passed on to others to see where they ended up or how many people were connected with the exchange. It turned out many in the experiment ended up to have a 5.6 connection that validated the 6 degrees of separation theory. I find it often happens when I am thinking about someone a lot - even if I haven't had contact with them for a while, either of us will call the other person and often hear - I have been thinking about you so much lately. Seems our connects are there even if we cannot at this point prove it - we know what we know.

week seven chaos theory

What does ordered chaos mean to me?
It feels similar to when things get out of hand in my drawer, cupboards etc. there is something that screams for order to be brought back again. Things however don't stay that way for too long and the process repeats itself again and again in life. The process of cleaning up the mess say in drawers, for me creates an even messier situation until order beings to unfold.

fractals as patterns of complex systems
Truly amazing the reproduction of self similar structures such as cloud, snowflakes, mt. ranges, river networks, down to broccoli and blood vessels to name a few. So that by taking a small piece away and examining it, one will find it replicates the larger pattern. I have seem rivers from the airplane that create such incredible pathways, but I never realized that they were replicated patterns. The Chinese in a similar way, realized we as humans were a microcosm of nature. That we had all the elements of wood, fire, earth, metal and water similar to that in nature. They then corresponded an element to an organ, and drew the qi and blood circulatory systems that pulled it all together.

Consciousness out of chaos
Jung realized that the psyche functions both in the time space continuum through the conscious ego, and also simultaneously in a psychic continuum that is totally unconscious. The bridging of these two very different arenas seems to bring a consciousness to the unconscious. Let me explain. How can we throw the coins for the I Ching - very randomly - chaotic if you will and write down a very orderly set of lines for a hexagram and have it speak directly to your personal situation. This is a way of letting the unconscious come through using the random throwing of coins (which is also not thinking and letting the information flow)

Cat static
Oh for sure we Minnesotans know about static electricity in our dry, heated winter homes. You don't need to do any dragging, just a few pets will bring about a zap or two and that's the end of that interaction with Lucy the kitty.

week six vibrations

Are all vibrations "good"? Vibrations seem to be just that without a positive or negative intent. However the tsunami that hit Sri Lanka was the result of vibrations deep in the ocean - net effect - disastrous. When I think of reverberations, I recoil with the sounds of loud music, thunder, sounds from a tornado, guns. The vibrations that come from electrical machines that can attach to acupuncture needles can do a variety of healing vibrations from dispersing energy, tonifying energy, interruption the flow of qi on a meridian to healing burns using aluminum foil. Vibrations that match exactly to other structures or ground will cause bridges to fall or highways to collapse. So it is more the effect that the vibrations cause. The vibrations will cancel out other frequencies that don't resonant or have a damping effect where it releases energy in the form of heat.

A resonant frequency is a natural rhythm that is determined by the size of the confining space of the vibration. As the waves go back and forth on themselves it's called a resonance. The example of the swing having a certain frequency to vibrate at easily and how difficult it would be to have it swing differently made sense. Most objects that vibrate, have a few frequencies. How unfortunate for the Tacoma bridge to have a frequency that resonated with the wind. I find that to be incredible that that kind of computations drive the building of structures. It has been my experience to be with people that instantly feel easy to be around. So the resonance of places, people and things either draw us to them or repel us according to the vibes of their resonance.

The energy/qi connection then seems about how we label things, but basically it all looks like the same thing. We are have a resonance the energy moving inside us and we can improve it by becoming more aware of ourselves and our needs. If there is an energy that exists down to the individual atoms then what we have is an orchestra of harmonies that we are each playing out. We can certainly affect each other by how we speak and act with each other - thereby either harmonizing or inflicting chaos, or harm by our actions. This certainly seems like energy tranfer or sharing the qi pot to me.

week two

Uncertainty; looking at life from a physics perspective only sure things are death and taxes so the uncertainty principle plays out all around us. Insurance companies want to give us security for our lives and our health. We can also buy (guarantee) it for our pets for a small fee. Retirement funds offer us rock solid futures. Although not a bad idea to save for old age, we have no idea what is around the next corner. Take for example in early March I'm walking the dog with plans to meet a friend later in the day for a movie. Boom, next things I know I have slipped on black ice that was covered by a thin blanket of snow and find myself heading to the emergency room and subsequent surgery to repair a badly broken wrist. That event wasn't on my calendar. So it shows that what we think is going to happen and what actually transpires can be eons apart.

Causality: Wikipeda defines causality or causation as having necessary relationship between one event (the cause) and another event (the effect) as the consequence. Okay seems pretty straight forward - but then the plot thickens - enter quantum entanglement. This explains that particles have an influence on each other so that what appears to be causing an event from one perspective - changes when viewed differently so that the view doesn't occur until after the effect has been caused. This whole theory holds lots of contraversy similar to the Bohr-Einstein debates. So it is that scientist postulate a theory and others try to prove it wrong until repeated experiments hold that something has relevance. Going deeper then is the idea of locality that says no influence is able to travel faster than the speed of light. So that any disturbance of the locality principle then causes vibrations in the normal assumption that cause must precede its' effect. Einstein refers to this as "spooky action at a distance" because there is no known way for such an interaction to occur. Whew. That's a lot to absorb - but then hold on because next comes synchronicity. More about that later.

Is the universe weird? My stars it is amazing. There's more that we don't understand than what we do understand. Typically, society says weird when they don't have a way of understanding, or don't want to, and just label something in the catagory of far out, no explanation available, etc. With each discovery of the patterns that are all around us (orbiting our nucleus) it is an awesome wonder of how could this be and where did it come from.

homework week 1

First week reflections on the meaning of time:
Slowly the door is opening and the wonders of looking at concepts like the meaning of time expands, circulates, and dances with possibilities. How different cultures view the same 24 hour segments and the goals, objectives, and focuses are subject to a lot of thought.

quiz one - Carol Hume

The meaning of time:
What attracts me to chinese medicine is a combination of things.  It goes beyond the symptoms of disease and looks for the root causes.  It offers guidelines that help with lifestyle, eating, and healing.  Chinese Medicine is time tested.  The rules used for eating have been around for centuries and hold true today.  It also looks at the role of emotions in causing illness and offers concrete methods to move the energy.  It is like the wise ones teaching us how to live a healthful life.
What do I honestly think of physics?  I do think it will be fascinating to understand what is all around us and a bit of how it works.  Matter, energy, waves etc are pieces that I can grasp.  I think this will be possible.
I had an experience in the boundary waters in Minnesota once that was quite unique.  I was in a canoe and I suddenly realized that at the shore line there were arrows that were carved into the stones at the waters' edge.  All around the lake, these arrows were visible.  At this point, I showed the others in my canoe this phenomenon and it was as if time stood still and we gasped at the wonder of what it meant to those who put the message there.
